When you’re running high-speed PET production, you aren’t dealing with seconds. You’re dealing with milliseconds. In a SACMI rotary setup, the cycle moves so fast that your IR lamps need to hit their peak temperature almost instantly. If they lag—even by a tiny bit—you’ll start seeing those annoying streaks of pearlescence or uneven walls in your bottles. It’s frustrating, and it wastes material. The trick to a fast start To get that “instant-on” feel, we played around with the filament mass and voltage. Basically, we kept the thermal mass low. Why? Because a lighter filament doesn’t need as much energy to get hot. We pair that with a high-voltage setup to push current through the quartz envelope fast. The result is a lamp that hits full power the second the trigger hits. It just keeps pace with the rhythm of the machine without skipping a beat. The nuts and bolts We use heavy-wall quartz because, let’s be honest, these things get incredibly hot. Thin glass would just bow under the pressure. As for the connectors—whether you’re using R7s or Sk15—we made sure they’re a perfect, tight fit. No gaps, no arcing. We also add a special coating to the quartz to bounce that IR energy back toward the preform. It makes the heat way more intense, but it does put more stress on the glass. One quick tip:**Keep your lamp holders clean.**If there’s oxidation on the contacts, it creates a bottleneck. You’ll lose that snap response time you need. Real talk from the shop floor Here’s the trade-off. These lamps are designed for massive heat density to keep up with your cycles, but that makes them a bit sensitive. If your voltage jumps around, you’re going to burn through filaments a lot faster. It’s worth spending a few minutes checking your SCR power controllers every now and then. And please, keep the cooling blowers clear of dust and debris. If the ends of the lamps overheat, they won’t last. Simple as that.
