
Stop Wasting Preforms: A Better Way to Heat Your Rotary Blow Molders
If you’re running Sidel SBO 10 or SACMI rotary machines, you know the drill. The window to get those PET preforms heated is tiny. When you’re moving at high speeds, every second counts. The real headache? Start-ups and cycle transitions. That lag time where you’re waiting for the lamps to catch up is where the waste happens. We built our replacement lamps specifically to kill that lag. Let’s talk about heat. Rotary blow molders have a brutal rhythm. If your lamps are sluggish and take forever to hit the right temperature, you’re going to see “cold spots” or uneven walls in your bottles. It’s frustrating. To fix this, we messed around with the filament geometry and the thickness of the quartz envelope. The goal was to cut down the “thermal inertia”—basically, we made them react faster. By tweaking the wattage-to-length ratio, the lamps hit their target temp almost instantly. They fit exactly where your old ones did, but they don’t make you wait around for the warm-up phase. Built to take a beating. These tubes go through a lot. They’re constantly heating up and cooling down, over and over. We use high-purity fused quartz because it can actually handle that kind of stress without snapping. Then there’s the vibration. High-speed machines shake. If your connection is loose, you get arcing, and that’s usually why lamps burn out way too early. We use standard R7s or Sk15 bases (depending on your setup) to make sure the connection stays tight and secure. One quick heads-up. These lamps pack a lot of heat density. While that’s great for reducing scrap during ramp-up, it puts more pressure on your reflectors. Here’s the thing: you’ve got to keep those reflector plates spotless. If they get dusty or oxidized, the infrared energy bounces right back into the quartz. That can cause a thermal shock crack, and nobody wants to deal with a shattered lamp mid-shift. Whenever you swap out your lamps, take a minute to audit your reflectors. Keep them clean, and your heat profile will stay exactly where it needs to be.
