Ever stepped into a bathroom and flipped on the heater, only to feel like you’re staring directly into the sun? Most of these heaters use short-wave infrared. It’s great for instant warmth, but that glare is a nightmare. It strains your eyes, and for babies—whose eyes are still developing—it’s actually a real concern. We decided to fix that by tweaking how the quartz heating element actually works.
Keeping the heat, losing the glare
The trick is to get the warmth without the blinding light. We do this by using special coatings or “doped” quartz glass on the lamp tube. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for your heater. It blocks out the harsh visible light and those aggressive UV rays, but lets the infrared heat slide right through. You still get that cozy, warm feeling on your skin, but the light stays soft. No squinting, no discomfort, and definitely no worrying about your retinas.
The balancing act
Here’s the thing: you can’t just crank up the power to make up for the filter. If we pushed too much wattage through a filtered tube, the glass could overheat or the coating might just flake off. It’s a bit of a balancing act between the wattage and the size of the filament to keep the heat steady and safe. You might notice these aren’t as bright as a standard halogen bulb. That’s on purpose. We’d rather give up a little brightness to make sure the light is safe for your family.
A few tips for installation
When you’re wiring these into your bathroom, make sure the housing has plenty of room to breathe. Since these lamps are filtered, the glass surface can sometimes run a bit hotter to get the same amount of heat into the room. If the fixture is too cramped, the thermal cutoff might kick in too early and shut everything down. And a pro tip: use a high-temp rated socket. Trust me, you don’t want to deal with melted plastic housings down the road.
