
Stop Freezing in the Changing Room
If you’ve ever worked in a Workshop with high ceilings or a drafty changing area, you know the struggle. You crank up the forced-air heat, but all that warmth just floats up to the rafters where it does absolutely nothing for you. You’re still shivering while trying to get your gear on. We solve this by ditching the air heaters and going with ceiling-mounted infrared. Instead of trying to warm up the entire volume of air in a giant room, these units beam heat straight down. It hits you and the floor directly. It’s basically instant. The science is simple: these heaters use infrared emitters. The second you flip the switch, the filament glows and sends out radiation at the speed of light. You aren’t waiting for a breeze of warm air to drift your way. You feel the heat on your skin and in your clothes almost immediately. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. When we set these up, we spend a lot of time on the layout. We look at the ceiling height and the “heat cone” to make sure the warmth actually lands where people are standing. Depending on how big the space is, we usually run them on 220V or 380V. But here is the tricky part: you have to get the wattage just right. If you go too low, you’ll end up with annoying cold spots. But if you overdo it? You’ve just created a scorching heat pocket that makes anyone standing directly under the lamp sweat. It’s a balancing act. Now, keep in mind that infrared isn’t a magic fix for everything. The warmth is only there while you’re standing in the light. The moment you step out of the beam, you’ll feel the chill again because the air itself isn’t actually hot. Also, a heads-up on the electrics. These things pull a lot of power the moment they kick in. If you’re installing a whole bank of 2kW heaters, make sure your breakers can handle the surge. Nobody wants the power to cut out across the whole shop just because it’s a freezing Tuesday in January.
