
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
If you’re designing an infrared heater for a bathroom, an IPX4 splash-proof rating is a good start, but it’s not the whole story. There’s a bigger problem we always have to tackle: the light. Nobody wants to step out of a shower and feel like they’re staring into a spotlight. It’s harsh. And when you’re thinking about kids or babies in the room, that glare isn’t just annoying—it’s actually stressful for their eyes. The goal is to give you that deep, cozy warmth without the blinding light. The secret is in the spectrum. Most basic short-wave lamps just blast everything—visible light, UV, you name it. That’s why they’re so bright. To fix this, we use special quartz coatings and filtered filaments. It basically pushes the energy away from the “bright” side and toward the long-wave spectrum. The result? You get the heat soaking into your skin, but your optic nerve stays relaxed. It’s a much softer experience. The struggle with waterproofing Now, let’s talk about the IPX4 part. That just means the unit can handle water splashing at it from any angle. We handle this with tight seals on the electrical terminals and some sturdy, moisture-resistant gaskets around the lamp. But here’s the catch. When you seal something up tight to keep water out, you’re also trapping heat inside. If you aren’t careful with how the housing breathes, you’ll fry your internal components in no time. We solve this by using aluminum heat sinks to pull that heat away from the wiring and get it out of there. A few tips for installation We designed these to be easy. They’re basically drop-in replacements for those old halogen bathroom lights, so they fit right into standard ceiling cut-outs. One quick warning:watch your voltage. I’ve seen people try to “over-volt” these lamps because they want the room to heat up faster. Don’t do that. It kills the filament way sooner, and worse, it can actually shift the light spectrum back into that harsh, harmful range. Just stick to the rated wattage. You’ll get consistent heat, and the light will stay soft.
